If it is a zip file, extract it to get the firmware file with .tar.md5 extension. if you want to flash a custom recovery like cwm or twrp, it might have either .tar or .tar.md5 extension. download the latest odin zip file (we use version 3.09) and extract the file on your pc.. If you download a tar.md5 file, you do not extract that. open odin and go to pda; click on that and look up where you got the tar.md5 file, that will be inported into odin. give it time because the digital signature (md5) is being checked..
